The Hawk's Prairie Rotarian 2/4/02 Last week's meeting: If you weren't there, you missed it! One terrific meeting! Bill Bryant(President-Elect) called the meeting to order. The flag salute was lead by none other than Jason Vatne (West Coast Bank). Our positive moment was given by Darcy Bloom (Elliot Sales) then we all sang The Star Spangled Banner lead by yours truly, and then we had Bob Kagy (ABC Printing) introduce 6 (at least) visiting Rotarians (most of them from the Lacey Club) along with some Rotarians from Vancouver BC. We sang them the Ken Balsley penned Hawk's Prairie Rotary song (I believe that we almost have it memorized) and then Bill introduced our "Getting to Know You" vocational talk by John Vlastelica(Lakeside Graphics). He began by telling us that he came from a home of 6 sisters and 3 brothers, and one bathroom in Aberdeen! (that must have been a lesson in patience) John graduated from Weatherwax high school, then went to Viet Nam, returning to attend Portland University. Right after all of that he went to being a Director for the YMCA, after which he said he went to work for Pioneer Bus. Forms a company which had been in business for 112 years, that recently was forced out of business. He worked for a few different firms in the Seattle Area before deciding to form his own business which is where his son-in-law works alongside him as a graphic designer. Lakeside Graphics specializes in custom printing and promotional products that enhance your company's image! Call John at 459-1353 whenever you need forms printing or promotional products. Plus he's a Grandpa 3 times over and one great guy who promotes the Washington Senior Games. We do have some great members! PROGRAM: Shawn Lewis, International Services Director introduced Doug Ante, a Rotarian, who really has a heart for Zimbawbwe in Africa. Doug provided us with a great program to show us really how great the Rotary Foundation helps out worldwide! This demonstrates how our donations to the Rotary Foundation to become a Paul Harris Fellow can make a difference!!! I had to leave early, so I didn't get to hear the special moments, or find out who won the drawing for the Mariners tickets from Rafael Colon, (Voices Internationale) but I told Lowell Gordon (Creative Office Furnishings) that if I won the money just to put it back in or if I won the tickets, I was going to take my son to a ball game. Maybe I'll find out later&&&Lowell? Next Week's Meeting: This upcoming week promises to be interesting, as Dave Cherry from First Community Bank will be giving us his "Getting to know you " talk . We'll have a number of special guests. We will be celebrating National Boy Scout Week, by honoring a number of Scouts who received the Rank of Eagle. Eagle Scout Brodie Buckland will discuss his path to Eagle. So make your plans to be there! Plus, don't forget to get your $50 in for The Paul Harris Sustaining membership, and make plans to be at the Paul Harris Dinner which the the meeting for the week of March 14TH at the West Coast Hotel. This is a 10 club joint meeting. Our own President, Joseph Beaulieu has been asked to Em Cee this evening event. That is another honor for Hawks Prairies. For more information see Shawn Lewis(or is that Shane?) Bill Bryant also said for all of us to look at the new Rotarian magazine on page 32 to see what Rotary was doing in Afghanistan and Pakistan. Check it out! Until next weeks meeting I leave you with this thought&&In one day, Samson slew 10,000 Philistines with the "jawbone of an ass" everyday in the USA, at least that many sales are killed with the same instrument.
