Yes, place in the cart
Only the items listed below go in your recycle cart. Remember:  When in doubt, throw it out.
  • Aluminum & tin cans
  • Pots & pans
  • Newspapers
  • Paper bags
  • Paperback books
  • Magazines, catalogs & mail (windows, staples & sticky notes ok)
  • Cereal & food boxes
  • Phone books
  • Cardboard (flattened)
  • Plastic bottles, jugs & jars (neck must be narrower than the base, no lids or caps)
  • Dairy tubs & yogurt cups
  • Rigid plant pots (empty, no dirt)
  • Plastic buckets (must be clean, no lids or handles)
  • Glass - put in a separate container that you provide.  The container must be between 5 and 20 gallons in size with drain holes in the bottom to prevent rain from filling up the container.  Glass containers that have water in them may be left uncollected.
Electronics and "technotrash"
Manufacturers are now required by state law to offer recycling services for certain electronic items at no cost to residents, nonprofits, small businesses, schools and local governments. The law took effect on January 1, 2009, and applies to the following items only:
  • TVs
  • Desktop computers
  • Laptop computers
  • Monitors
  • E-book readers (such as The Kindle and the Nook)
  • Portable DVD players
  • The Rule of thumb:  If it can fit in your hand then it is most likely to be recyclable.

Items that can't go in the recycle bin:
Facial Tissue, aluminum foil or aluminum pans, paper towels, pizza boxes, disposable cups-especially all Starbucks and other coffee houses, hangers, hardback books, ice cream containers, egg cartons & milk cartons-dairy-juice-nut milk cartons.

Thurston County Reusable Materials Exchange
If you have working electronic items of any type, try listing them on an online materials exchange websitehttp://www.2good2toss.com/thurston/?content=thurston

Take hazardous products to HazoHouse at the Waste and Recovery Center. Visit the HazoHouse website to find facility hours and what items are accepted. Disposal is free for residents; businesses must register and pay a disposal fee.

Transfer station and waste export
Since 2000, Thurston County has been sending garbage to the Roosevelt Regional Landfill in Klickitat County, WA. Your garbage now goes through seven steps.
  1. First, a garbage hauler picks up garbage from the curb or dumpster and loads it into a garbage truck. Some people haul their own garbage to a collection site.
  2. The hauler takes the garbage to the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center in Hawk’s Prairie. Waste is also hauled from drop box sites to the Waste and Recovery Center.
  3. At the transfer station, the garbage is tipped, compacted into a cube weighing 27-30 tons, and pushed into a shipping container.
  4. The shipping container of garbage is then trucked to Centralia to be put on a train.
  5. Every day, the shipping containers are loaded onto a train and carried more than 200 miles to the small town of Roosevelt on the Columbia River.
  6. The shipping containers are removed from the train in Roosevelt and loaded onto trucks.
  7. The garbage is trucked to the nearby Roosevelt Regional Landfill and unloaded, and the empty containers are returned for re-use. (Watch a YouTube video)
