A beautiful day to work on the Statue just in time for Memorial Day. Now all we have to do is provide potted flowers for Memorial Day.

Our 3rd Annual HPR Foundation Auction was not only great fun with good food, but we raised over $ 10,000 in donations towards RI International Foundation Paul Harris credits for many HPR members and over $ 25,000 in just 3 years.  Rotary Foundation Donations go to funding International and local projects to help better our world and communities.  Here HPR Foundation Director Noel Ostrander helps Live Auctioneer Todd Monohon shame more money out of attendees.  Both did a great job.

We are only 7-8% of the World's population, and yet we contribute almost 80% of all goods and services worldwide. A feat that could not be accomplished w/o a strong Military. May God Bless our Service Men and Women worldwide as we take this day to Honor and Thank You for your Service

The Hawks Prairie Rotary Club recently sponsored 10 student recognition awards aptly titled, "Hawk Prairie Heroes." Teachers and counselors from North Thurston Public Schools were asked to nominate students who had overcome a social, emotional, or financial barrier to improve themselves in the school environment and/or provide a distinctive service to the school or community. "For some students the opportunities afforded to others just aren't there," said Hawks Prairie Rotarian and Asst. Supt. of NTPS, Brian Wharton, who made the presentations. "There are many scholarships and awards given strictly just for academic achievement. These students have gone above and beyond transcending personal barriers, physical and learning disabilities, family challenges and so much more.yet they all completed graduation requirements and are making plans for their future." The students and their friends and family were invited to a Rotary luncheon where they received a plaque and a $250 scholarship award. This year's recipients are: Jordan Malizio (SSHS), Seung Lee (NTHS), Vihn Phan (NTHS), Kamara Green ( NTHS), Ashanta Hollis (THS), Rachel Coley (THS), Lindsey Keith (THS), Blake Geyen (RRHS), Coty Wargnier (RRHS), Tiffany Gilpin (RRHS).

OLYMPIA, Oct. 15 - I've struggled with a clean way to post and share all the photos I've had the privilege to take over the past couple of years. The ClubRunner site (our site here) just is too cumbersome for anything but one or two images. SO.... I've set up a separate website that you can link to to view photos. I have two of this season's biggest events - The Mushroom Festival and the 2008 Military Family Support March posted. You can access them by going to this site: http://web.me.com/jlofoto/HPR_Photos.

I will continue to sort and post different album, so check this new site frequently. Or better yet, sign up on the RSS feeder to be notified of updates to the albums automatically.

From Bob Wubbena of the Downtown Rotary Club:

"Cool Jazz and Clean Water" is more than a slogan to the seven Rotary Clubs in the Lacey, Olympia and Tumwater area. The seven clubs have lived their model of "service above self" as they have developed, implemented and grown the November High School Jazz Band event for area schools and then treated the community to some of the best Jazz music and military band performances of the year. Then they add to the plan some "clean water projects" for some of the poorest of the poor in Malawi, Africa. This Rotary event "gives back" to the needs of our community and the needs of our global citizens.

Lacey, Nov. 16 - Treacy Duerfeldt, District 5020 Foundation Permanent Fund Chair, told the HPR members today that they have a chance to make zone, district (and maybe national) Rotary history again. HPR was the first club in the District to achieve 100% sustaining members in Paul Harris. HPR has maintained this distinction every year since it was founded.

Now, Duerfeldt challenges HPR to achieve 100% Benefactors and be the first (or one of the first) clubs in the country to do so. We are very close! If we can do this before January 1, 2008, Duerfeldt promises to make sure we are recognized nationally.

Becoming a Benefactor is easy. The only requirement is to pledge at least $1000 to the Rotary permanent fund in your estate planning. See Sherry Jennings or Shawn Lewis for more information.

Treacy Duerfeldt is available to discuss other ways of giving to the Permanent Fund. Treacy joined Rotary at age 26 and was mistaken for an exchange student by his new club! Since then, he's become a Level 4 Bequest Society member, a Benefactor, a Multiple Paul Harris Fellow, a member of the Paul Harris Society.
Treacy is a 3rd generation Rotarian. His dad is a Past District Governor and his granddad is a past member of Tacoma #8.

Please become a Benefactor and help Hawks Prairie Rotary set the standard for Rotary clubs across the USA and make Rotary history once again!!

Growing our membership* is important for us!  It increases the number of people contributing to the Rotary mission, the money Rotary raises through the collection of dues, and the networking capabilities of this group as a whole.  That's why bringing in new members is everyone's responsibility at Hawk's Prairie Rotary! For the first time, in order to help jumpstart our 2008 membership recruitment, we are officially declaring January as "Hawk's Prairie Rotary Membership Month"!  Our goal is 100% participation and we are encouraging every HP Rotarian to bring one guest to one meeting in the month of January.  Here's how it will work:

This Committee "Spotlight" is on Vocational Services.

From Grace Kendall: As business leaders, Rotarians share their skills and expertise through vocational service, one of the Four Avenues of Service. Your vocational service efforts can play a vital role in improving the quality of life for those hardworking members of the community who need direction and expertise. By participating in any of a number of vocational service activities ---- mentoring, career days, vocational awards, business assistance, or even talking about your job at a club meeting. Through Vocational Services you can turn your experience into an invaluable resource for others.

Unfortunately for Greg, the black marble was not selected.  He does, however, get to receive a free lunch and along with the rest of the club, get's the chance of winning again next week.

Korte advised that no bank or financial institution will solicite personal information (passwords, social security numbers, mother's maiden names, etc.) via email (or phone call). NOVEMBER 10, 2006 - HPR recognized Veterans Day today by asking members to bring a veteran to the meeting.Ã' Veterans who attended represented the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard. These honored veterans saw service in from the Second World War to the present war in Iraq.Ã' For a Rotary Club who's mission to honor the military and the military family is central, the meeting held special significance.

Sadly, the Club recognized the death this week in IraqÃ' of Sgt. Lucas White from Fort Lewis' 1st Battalion, 23rd Regiment, 3rd Brigade, 2nd Infantry Division, with a moment of silence.Ã' There will be a memorial service for Sgt. White at the Fort Lewis chapel on November 16 and he will be buried at his request in Arlington National Cemetary, where he will be close to his brothers who died fighting in Afghanistan.

Sherry Jennings was honored by District 5020 Governor Joan Firkins, at the March 17th meeting for her endowment to the Permanent Fund of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International.

The Permanent Fund ensures The Rotary Foundation's ability to meet the urgent needs of the future through an endowment. An endowed contribution is a gift that the Foundation holds in perpetuity. The gift is invested, and only a portion of its investment return is used for purposes specified by the donor. To guard against inflation, the remaining investment return is added to the principal. The goal is to ensure that the principal maintains its real value over time. Thus, gifts to the Permanent Fund will grow and continue to support The Rotary Foundation for years to come.  More information of the Permanent Fund may be found at:  http://www.rotary.org/foundation/development/permanentfund/gift.html .

In 1979 a group of local business owners got together and opened Lacey Bank. Within a couple of years, it was decided that our name should better reflect the areas we wanted to serve. In 1981, our bank's name was changed to First Community Bank. Today, Venture Bank has 20 branches in Lewis, Thurston, Pierce, and Grays Harbor Counties, with assets of around $460 million. Venture Bank offers a whole new way of banking that is purely Northwest, with an attitude that is as Independent as You.
